FOCUS – Croatian Vineyards

For this new issue of our newsletter, we invite you to discover the beauty and richness of the Croatian vineyards.

A vineyard steeped in history, with incomparable geographical and climatic diversity, and one of the oldest vineyards in the world (over 2,500 years old). Zinfandel, a grape variety that has become famous in California, has its origins in Croatia, where it has been cultivated since ancient times. Tasting a Croatian wine also means drinking a bit of history!

The list of native grape varieties in this Balkan country is as long as the Croatian coastline. The richness and diversity of soils, landforms and climates have influenced the development of more than 130 autochthonous grape varieties (Malvazija/malvoisie, Grasevina, Malvazija, Plavac Mali, Grk, Babić, Plavina, Pošip, Crnljenak…), resulting in the production of varied, high-quality wines.

The vineyards are spread over two main regions: continental Croatia and coastal Croatia.

In all, there are no fewer than 300 classified wine-growing regions. White wines predominate, but excellent reds are also produced.

As it would be impossible to describe in full the diversity of Croatian terroirs and wines, let’s linger for a moment over two wineries: Rizman Vina doo (South Dalmatia/Coastal Croatia) and OPG Damjanic vina (Istria/Coastal Croatia).
